When you mention the word Planned Parenthood, the first thing that comes to peoples minds are Birth Control and Abortions, but Planned Parenthood is so much more than that. It is a beacon in providing comprehensive sex education without stigma and judgment.
The 2019 Leadership Council Conference allowed funders to see first hand how their noble contributions make a difference in millions of people’s lives nation wide. It also highlighted how in critical moments like were living today, where millions are left vulnerable on their most basic need of health care, their funding dollars get them the access they need.
The current administration has tried to harm this great organization’s reputation by speaking misinformation about it’s services. Too often people get trapped in the misinformation and spread it. Not noticing that the greater issue lies on the continued generational trauma misinformation can inflict on communities of color. Our communities now more than ever should be at the forefront of decision making in the United States, because we are the most vulnerable populations. This is why the work of organizations like Planned Parenthood are so crucial because they help close the gap between healthcare and those entitled to it’s access. Planned Parenthood prides it’s self in providing CARE NO MATTER WHAT!
On November 15th, 2019 Danely López, a Sexuality Educator from Planned Parenthood was honored to speak in front of funders and other Planned Parenthood affiliates. The Leadership Council was put together by Planned Parenthood Federation of American to showcase the wonderful work it’s affiliates are doing nationwide. Danely spoke about her unique experiences working in communities all throughout New York City and specifically the work she is doing in Latinx communities. Ms. López has been an advocate for sexual and reproductive health education for the past 10 years, since she was just a 16 year old sophomore in high school.
In her speech to the council she expressed her love for the work that she does and the importance for it. She stated ” I have been with PPNYC as a Sexuality Educator for three years, what motivates me to wake up and go to work every morning are the Latinx students who, like me, were once in the dark about their sexual and reproductive health. I want to empower them to take control of their health; I want to be for others what Planned Parenthood was once for me as a young person. In my current position, I have come across many young Latinx students who are hesitant to talk about sex because it is just something that is silenced in our communities. That is why I take my job very seriously– because the information I am providing to these youth could save their lives, and help them help others.”
Ms. López ended her speech by saying how her work has influenced her to continue her education in health policy. ” I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Public Health specifically in Health Policy because I want comprehensive sex ed to become the norm in this country. I know that if we continue to grow comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education programs, we will be equipping the leaders of tomorrow to make change and build better communities for young people everywhere– where they have access to the information and resources they need, with freedom and without judgement.”
In an era where mis-information is at an all time high, we need more people like Danely López to come forward and speak their true experiences in front of the world. Common knowledge is not as common as most people would make it seem to be that’s why conferences like the Leadership Council are so important.
